Dal Fry Recipe

Dal fry is one of most popular and oldest recipe of Indian cuisines. It provide large number of calories and rich source of numerous essential nutrients particularly dietary fiber and protein supplements. So today we are going to make Dal Fry recipe in traditional way.

  • For Dal
  • 1 cup Pigeon Pea/Tuvar Dal
  • 1/4 cup Split Bengal Gram/Chana Dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Oil/Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 Cups of Water
  • For Dal Fry
  • 1 medium sized Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium sized Tomato, finely chopped
  • 5-6 Red chillies, slightly crushed
  • 2-3 tablespoon Oil/Ghee
  • 8-10 Garlic cloves
  • 1 inch Ginger/Adrak
  • Pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
  • 10-12 Curry Leaves/Kadi Patta
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds/Jeera
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds/Mohari
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 2 tablespoon Coriander Leaves, finely chopped.
  • Salt to taste

Dal Fry Preparation

Take 1 cup of Tuvar Dal and 1/4 cup of Chana Dal and rinse with water.

Take both the dals (lentils) in a pressure cooker and add 1/2 teaspoon of Turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon of oil and 1 teaspoon of salt along with 2 cup of water.

Pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles on a low flame. Once it cooked, just mash it up using spoon and keep it aside for sometime.

Take another pan and heat the 2-3 tablespoon oil or ghee. Its time to add seasoning ingredients, add 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds(Jeera) and 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds(Mohari).

Saute them for some seconds. Add 5-6 crushed red chillies and fry it for few seconds.

Add chopped onion, ginger + garlic paste and curry leaves, saute the mixture well. So that our onion gets nice little brown color.

Now add 1 medium sized finely chopped fresh tomato and cook until tomato turn tender.

Its time to add few more spices 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder, 1 teaspoon Garam Masala and 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder.

Let this cook till my tomatoes get nice and soft.

Now add our mashed dal to this masala mixture. Pour enough water to make dal little bit thinner. Now add some salt.

Stir the dal properly and add finely chopped coriander leaves. Make sure that your gas is on low flame. After 8-10 minutes dal fry get started simmering.

Our Dal Fry is ready now. You can serve hot dal fry with jeera rice or plain steamed rice.

Garnish dal fry with coriander leaves.
